About Frederik Jan van den Berg
Born in Gouda, 27-7-1973, The Netherlands.
In his work Frederik Jan mainly makes objects, either flat or three dimensional, that have a monumental and architectonic space in them, or refer to the urban space around them. The materials ms-polymer and silicone which he mainly uses apart from paint to create the images are of industrial and architectonic origin, and support the underlying concept of the works. The purpose of these works is to make them part of, and strengthen our architectonic experience.
There is also a clear link with art history in the work. He mainly 'paints' on old-fashioned linen, and therefore the works can be still be regarded as paintings. Artists like Mondriaan and Pollock are translated into the new material and are combined into pieces which are clearly his.
His work can be seen as sculpture on a flat surface, as well as painting in the third dimension. He is examining the boundaries of the plastic arts and extending them outward in his own way whilst staying close to the roots of contemporary art.
